"Stormcock" and a Triton drilling platform at Cammell Lairds in 1963 Catalogue No.210
Cammell Lairds used their skills in handling heavy-gauge sheet steel to make some of the early offshore oil drilling platforms called Triton.
One is seen here being tested in the dock in 1963, with "Stormcock" in the foreground. The process of forming and bending the tubes is shown in some of the other photos on page 3 of the thumbnails, - scenes which show the immense skills and resources which were available then.
Although shipbuilding was the core of the business, the skills of the workforce, and size of the workspace, were transferrable to any other large-scale fabrications and projects such as Triton.
