Salthouse Dock, Liverpool, taken from the Albert Dock building in 1897. Catalogue No.145
Sail is still king in this photo of Salthouse Dock in 1897.
The photographer was perched precariously on the roof of Albert Dock building with his enormous camera (the glass negative is 10"x12"). The mahogany and brass camera with its wooden tripod would have needed a lot of effort to get it there, but the detail he captured was incredible.
The magnificent Clock tower which was such a feature of the Albert Dock Building would have been looming behind him. Having survived two World Wars, the clock tower was still there exactly 60 years later when some fool decided to pull it down in 1957, - no doubt for very good reasons!
